Ray Camire
Renald L. Camire (Ray) was born on July 3, 1929 to a French-Canadian family.
His father died when he was sixteen, leaving his mother to care for him, his five brothers
and two sisters.
Ray grew up in Biddeford and attended the Catholic schools St. Andre's and St. Louis. When he was a sophomore, he left school and began working to help support his mother and younger siblings. Like his older brothers, he went to work at the Bates Mill making blankets. For his next job, Ray became a meat cutter at a neighborhood grocery store. In 1953, he used his meat cutting skills to start up a part time business, "Ray’s Lunch Van." He sold fast food out of a van until 1986, when he decided to give his business a foundation in Pepperell Square. The same year he also changed the name to "Rapid Ray's." Ray passed away in 1989. He suffered a heart attack and complications during bypass surgery. He left a wife, four children, six grandchildren and his business. The Camire family decided to keep Rapid Ray's going; his wife, Lillian, took up the paperwork and his two sons, Donald and Norman, continued serving up the food. Many years later, Ray's legacy still lives on. © 2007 Rapid Ray's Jennifer Camire |
